Tokyo had long been on our list, a city that moves between two worlds so effortlessly: centuries-old tradition and electric, considered modernity, side by side. From quiet tea houses to neon-lit crossings, our family found ourselves slowing down, noticing the smallest details, and falling in love with a culture built on precision and grace.

In Tokyo, beauty is found in contrast. A reminder that true luxury doesn't need to shout, and like the Japanese philosophy of Ikigai, it reveals itself in craftsmanship, in stillness, and in the quiet moments tucked between the city's energy.

STAY

Tokyo's accommodation scene mirrors the city itself, a study in contrasts. Sprawling new districts like Azabudai Hills bring a sense of community and design-forward energy, On the other, the city's more established luxury hotels offer something quieter: restrained interiors, private gardens, and views over the Imperial Palace that feel worlds away.

Tokyo offers a rare blend of understated luxury and contemporary design. Our family stayed at Janu Tokyo, a warm, sociable retreat that felt like a home away from home.

Before finding our way to Aman Tokyo, a serene sanctuary perched high above the city with sweeping views over the Imperial Palace gardens. Both offer a peaceful counterpoint to the pace of the pace of the city beyond their doors

EAT

Tokyo's culinary world spans everything form the ritual of the Tsukiji Outer Market, to the artistry of a single tasting menu and beautiful matcha variations. Where stalls spill over with fresh sashimi, grilled skewers or amazing desert creations, and the energy of the city's food culture is on full display.

For a true occasions, Narisawa is widely regards as one of Tokyo's finest restaurants, a nature inspired tasting menu moving between Japanese and French technique. And for something more low-key but just as memorable, Tokyo's Ichiran Ramen is on of the city's more famous spots. Its unpretentious, a little theatrical with it's unique solo dining booths and a favourite amongst locals and visitors alike.

DO

We love exploring a few of our family's favourite Tokyo neighbourhoods. Shibuya, home to the famous Scramble Crossing, is perfect for fashion, people watching and rooftop view over the city. Shinjuku brings an electric, playful energy and endless fascinating laneways to explore. Ginza brings it all together with luxury shopping, fine dining and elegant architecture at every turn.

We watched a traditional tea ceremony, a beautiful meditative ritual that felt like a window into old Japan. For something wonderfully immersive Team Labs was a family favourite, a digital art experience where you walk, wade and wander through light, water & colour.

WEAR

In Tokyo, jewellery becomes an exercise in restraint, pieces that speak softly rather than shout. Delicate diamond bands and lustrous fine pieces paired with efortless street style feel at home against the clean lines of Japanese design.
Tokyo is also home to some of the best designer vintage shopping in the world. Immaculately curated stores across Harajuku and Shibuya stock everything from archival Chanel and Hermès to rare Comme des Garçons pieces. It's a reflection of the city's broader relationship with craftsmanship, nothing is disposable, everything is treated with care, and a well-loved piece is valued as much as a new one.
